Emergency Diesel Generator Operation, Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Introduction

This course focuses on; terminology related to power back-up generators, types of power plants, components of diesel power generation unit, cost of electricity generation, and selection of proper diesel engine generators for specific applications. The course also presents the basics of electric power generation, how diesel engines for power back-up work, and how they are controlled. In addition; the installation of the Diesel gen-set is also presented in detail. A detailed description of various injection equipment used on diesel engines and the control of injection quantity and timing are included. The maintenance operations, the condition-based monitoring, the troubleshooting, and the storage procedure of diesel engine generators are discussed. Finally; various case studies of Diesel gen-set failure are analyzed.

Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

    • List and interpret the basic terminology related to electric power generation
    • Outline the advantages of using diesel engines for power generation
    • Describe the layout, construction, and the principle of diesel engine power generation unit
    • Explain how to select a diesel engine for power back-up
    • Outline the characteristics and design features of diesel engines
    • Explain the operation principle of various types of fuel injection systems used on diesel engines
    • Describe how air charging into diesel engines done and how fuel injected.
    • Outline the basic safety measures in installing, operating, and maintaining the diesel engine power generators
    • List the factors that affect the output of diesel generator set
    • Describe how diesel generators are prepared for storage
    • Outline the periodic maintenance operations for diesel generators
    • Outline the common troubles of diesel generators, their reasons, and the related corrective actions

Training Methodology

This is an interactive course. There will be open question and answer sessions, regular group exercises and activities, videos, case studies, and presentations on best practice. Participants will have the opportunity to share with the facilitator and other participants on what works well and not so well for them, as well as work on issues from their own organizations. The online course is conducted online using MS-Teams/ClickMeeting.
